PHP Performance Tips from Stas Malyshev

On his blog, Stas Malyshev (Core Contributor to PHP and Zend Employee) has posted a “list of PHP Performance tips that he wants novices to know about”:http://php100.wordpress.com/2009/07/13/php-performance/. He realized that while he had “previously panned a post by Google about PHP Performance”:http://php100.wordpress.com/2009/06/26/php-performance-google/ of having lots of incorrect or misleading information, but that he never gave good substitute advice himself.

bq. So here are my thoughts about what would be good for the beginner to consider when he starts with PHP performance optimizations. Note that I do not say it’s the only thing you should do – there are a bunch of articles, talks, blogs, etc. about PHP performance and many of them contain very good advice and go into much more details than I intend to go into. But I think the items below are ones that you should ensure you are doing to the full extent before you go to look around for performance tricks.

This “performance article”:http://php100.wordpress.com/2009/07/13/php-performance/ is really great, covers the basics that people need to know, and gives lots of options in cases where outside software is desired (open source or commercial).
