On July 30th in DFW, take part in the Dallas TechFest! It is a one day technical conference and we're happy to say that we have a good PHP track. Let's blow out the attendance. It's on a Friday so you won't be getting anything done anyway.
The full speaker list is at http://www.dallastechfest.com/Agenda/tabid/88/Default.aspx. There are several PHP-based sessions that you might find interesting.

I’ve been developing LAMP for 8 years, but have had very little in actual training. In fact, it’s all been self taught. Would I get much out of the conference or better to get some basic training first?

First? No. You should be able to get a lot of benefit out of simply attending. However that doesn’t mean that training wouldn’t still be a benefit. You’ll get a lot of information from the conference, but you’ll get a lot of guided practice from the training.
