Marc Gear Posts His Zend PHP5 Certification Study Guide Review

p. Marc Gear has just posted his “review”:http://www.onekay.com/blog/archives/19 of the Zend PHP 5 Certification Guide. It looks like he was pleased with his purchase. Let’s steal a quick quote to backup my theory.

bq. I brought the book to make sure that my knowledge was sufficient to take the test before I spent $125 on the voucher, with the intention of ebaying the book once I’d finished, however, having read most of the book last night, I think it would be a good addition to my bookshelf, especially to lend to other developers on my team.

p. So in Marc’s opinion, the book is a keeper. (always a good sign) I’ll leave it to you to delve deeper into his (much more complete) “review”::http://www.onekay.com/blog/archives/19 of the book.

Are you certified, Cal? Most php developers I know never bothered… especially the ones with enough applications under their belt that they need only show off their work to get a job.

Hi,

No, I am not yet certified. I’m hoping to study for the test this December and be certified before the new year.

As a hiring manager (previous life) I can say that I’ve never hired anyone just because they are certified. However certified candidates usually float to the top of my stack. I figure if they’ve taken the time to take the test, and they knew enough to pass it that it’s a good signal that they know their stuff. I’ve only interviewed one ZCE while hiring PHP developers but in that one case, my rule of thumb did not steer me wrong.
