My friend, Julie Miller sent me over the first chapter to share with you.

If you are not familiar with symfony, this chapter is a great introduction. Here’s a little taste for you. This is the summary for Chapter 1.

bq. “Symfony”:http://www.symfony-project.com/ is a PHP 5 web application framework. It adds a new layer on top of the PHP language, providing tools that speed up the development of complex web applications. This book will tell you all about it, and you just need to be familiar with the basic concepts of modern programming to understand it – namely object-oriented programming (OOP), object-relational mapping (ORM), and rapid application development (RAD). The only required technical background is knowledge of PHP 5.

p. Those crafty devils at Apress timed the recent release of the book to coincide (roughly) with the recent “announcement of the 1.0 milestone”:http://www.symfony-project.com/weblog/2007/02/19/symfony-1-0-released.html for symfony.

If you are interested in reading more, just click “here”:http://devzone.zend.com/content/pdfs/Def_Guide_To_Symfony_ch1.pdf to view the PDF.

Look for more about this book in coming weeks. I’ve got an interview with the two authors, Francois Zaninotto and Fabien Potencier, as well as a full review.

Excellent, but the link to the PDF is a 404 for me. Please update the URL, I’m very interesting in giving it a read through :)

I’ve fixed it, checked it, and it’s working now.

The entire contents of the book can be found on Symfony’s website: http://www.symfony-project.com/book/trunk. It’s been released under a GFDL license.

Yes, the book is released under GDFL at http://www.symfony-project.com/book/trunk. This is a fact that we talked about in the author interview to be published in the next week or so. I think it’s a great idea and hope that after reading it on-line, people will support the project and authors by buying a printed copy.

You should also note that the framework has a native ZF bridge wich enables the use of ZF modules within symfony. PHP Frameworks walking hands in hands. That’s a change.

The smart angels at Zend could time to release a book around the release of ZF 1.0, too!

The book could be releaased under GDFL. But I would like to buy a ‘handy’ hard copy of it!
