See and be seen, hear and be heard. Conference season is upon us, which one are you going to?

If you have been to a PHP conference, you know how much fun and learning goes on at these things. Anytime you get that many PHP developers together, great ideas are bound to be hatched. If you have never had the opportunity to attend one, this year is the year to change that. Between now and June there are some great gatherings of the PHP community for you to attend. Here’s a quick rundown of the ones that I know of and think are interesting to PHP developers.

PHPUK : February 25th, 2011

Spend a day in London learning what’s new in PHP. PHPUK is a great opportunity for developers from London, the UK, and the surrounding region get together, learn and share.

Day Camp 4 Developers : March 5th

Day Camp 4 Developers #2: Telecommuting is a single day, technology agnostic, virtual conference for developers interested in learning tips and techniques for telecommuting. While not strictly for PHP developers, three of the speakers at DC4D#2 are members of the PHP community. This is the only conference listed here where it is acceptable to attend in your pajamas.

ConFoo : March 9th-11th, 2011

Organized by Anna Filina and friends, ConFoo is a multi-technology conference. There is always a great PHP track but since PHP developers have to know and use other technologies, ConFoo is a good place to broaden your horizons.

PHP Community Conference : April 21-22, 2011

The PHP Community Conference is a two-day event. They kick things off with a tutorial day that will introduce you to tools and ideas that you can use in your code right away. The second day will consist of presentations that will inspire you to create something new with PHP.

PHP Day May 12-14, 2011

They will show new development traits, best-practices and success cases related to quality, revision control, test-driven development, continuous integration and so on. There are also talks about design, project management, agile and various php-related technologies.

The Dutch PHP Conference : May 19-21, 2011

Come to Amsterdam and dive into the deep end of PHP. DPC is known for its highly technical talks. With one day of tutorials and 2 days of thought-provoking sessions, DPC is an excellent conference for those serious about their craft.

php|tek : May 24-27, 2011

For the 5th year running, the PHP community will gather in Chicago for a few days of learning and laughing. php|tek’s focus has always been community and this year is no different. Join us in Chicago for everything from cutting edge technologies to community building sessions.

BONUS:

At each of these conferences you will run into PHP community members. Know who they are before you get there by subscribing to the Voices of the ElePHPant podcast. Weekly episodes of Voices of the ElePHPant introduce you to the people that are making the PHP community special.

Can’t make any of these great conferences this spring? Don’t worry, the fall conference seasons promises to be just as good or better with IPC, ZendCon and the annual CodeWorks tour.

Disclosure: I am involved with DC4D, php|tek, Voices of the ElePHPant and speaking at DPC. Please don’t hold it against any of them.

About Cal Evans

Many moons ago, at the tender age of 14, Cal touched his first computer. (We're using the term "computer" loosely here, it was a TRS-80 Model 1) Since then his life has never been the same. He graduated from TRS-80s to Commodores and eventually to IBM PC's. For the past 10 years Cal has worked with PHP and MySQL on Linux OSX, and when necessary, Windows. He has built on a variety of projects ranging in size from simple web pages to multi-million dollar web applications. When not banging his head on his monitor, attempting a blood sacrifice to get a particular piece of code working, he enjoys building and managing development teams using his widely imitated but never patented management style of "management by wandering around". Cal is currently based in Nashville, TN and is gainfully unemployed as the Chief Marketing Officer of Blue Parabola, LLC. Cal is happily married to wife 1.28, the lovely and talented Kathy. Together they have 2 kids who were both bright enough not to pursue a career in IT. Cal blogs at http://blog.calevans.com and is the founder and host of Day Camp 4 Developers
