Greg Beaver: Interesting, Potentially Critical Bug in PEAR
Recently Greg Beaver posted on his blog about a problem with PEAR. Here’s a quick quote from his interesting but very technical blog post.
Recently, I noticed that in certain cases, PEAR appears to sort dependencies in slightly the wrong order when installing packages…This will unfortunately delay the release of PEAR 1.5.0 stable, as I consider this bug to be a critical bug. Why?...If the packages are installed in the wrong order, this causes serious doodoo to hit the fan.
Ok, so those quotes are taken out of context but they still paint the picture of the problem for you. Greg details his thought process for finding and solving the problem. It’s an interesting read and if PEAR is important to you or you like to read terms like “topological sorting” then you won’t want to miss it.
