What the Web's Most Popular Sites Are Running On

Royal Pingdom recently published an article titled What the Web’s most popular sites are running on evaluating seven”supersites” – TechCrunch, FeedBurner, iStockPhoto, YouSendIt, Meebo, Vimeo and Alexaholic – on the web and the technologies that back them.

Pingdom performed a survey of these seven “super sites” that focused on web, database and file server numbers and setup, operating systems, bandwidth usage, network hardware and other technical questions relevant to maintaining a site. For those who are interested in the nitty-gritty details there is a PDF matrix with the survey results attached to this article.

The article evaluates Web Servers, Database OS and scripting language and as one would expect, PHP comes out on top as the most popular scripting language.

They wrap things up nicely with their cosing thoughts, one of which is this.

It’s worth noting that even among the alternatives, most are open source. Open source rhymes well with the Internet’s focus on standardization, more so now than ever before.

It’s a quick read but a good one. They show the trends both entrenched and emerging. If you are interested in keeping up with what others are doing in web development, this is a good article.
