SDWest Update
SDWest is one of the big events in our industry. There are sessions covering just about everything…except PHP. Even so, there are some great sessions going on here this week and I’ll be sharing with you about what I see. I’m also here because DevZone is up for a Jolt award along with Zend Framework. If you are in the area, the awards ceremony is free, just register for an Expo pass and show up tonight (Wednesday) and cheer us on.
Monday and Tuesday were tutorial days, I didn’t get a chance to attend Monday but Tuesday, I did attend a tutorial presented by Keith Chapman of WS02 about building mash-ups using their mash-up server. They even have a community server setup you can play with at mooshup.com
Today I attended Steve Blank’s presentation on “Starting and Running an Entrepreneurial Company”. Most of the content came from his book, “The Four Steps to the Epiphany”. It was an interesting talk. He was speaking to engineers, not marketeers and talked about how early startups should be careful who they hire to do sales. His theory is that in startups that are still preparing their product, objections from customers are not to be “overcome” but to be considered as advice on how ot make the product better. It was great because the underlying theme was one that I’ve been hearing from “New Media Gurus” for a while, “Marketing is a conversation”. (My summary, not his)
For those interested, I’m tweeting the sessions I attend, feel free to follow along via the web or by Ed Finkler’s award winning AIR based app, Spaz.
