Andrew Hedges has released a Mac OS X widget for PHP programmers. On his web website he describes PHPfr as:
PHP Function Reference is the ultimate reference widget for PHP developers.
I don’t dispute his claim as I believe it to be the only reference widget available. (But that’s beside the point.) As with everything on the web, the current release, 0.9.4b, is a Beta. (This is not Web 2.0, it’s Web 0.2b!)
The feature list is pretty cool:
- Fast lookup of any PHP function (no network connection required)
- Extensive cheat sheet including regular expressions, $_SERVER variables, fopen() modes, and more
- Interactive date() formatter – enter a date format string and preview the result
- Favorites list – save functions to your favorites for quick retrieval
- Multiple language support – PHPfr ships with the English version of the PHP documentation installed and simple instructions for installing other versions
Download information and the credits can be found on the page. I’ve pretty much ripped off all his other content for this post. If you are a Mac PHP developer and won’t seek treatment, this is a cool little helper for you.

This site was developed using the Zend Development Environment on Mac OS X, so the vocal minority can be quite loud. That is not to say we use only Mac OS X. We work on Mac OS X, Windows XP and 2003 Server, Free BSD and Linux in development and writing. We actually use everything we can get our hands on to have a broad view of where PHP lives.
