Great Article on SOAP and PHP

A few days ago Marcus Whitney (personal friend, PHP Evangelist, and all around good guy) posted an article on ART by Paul Reinheimer titled Using PHP5’s SOAP Support. I’m really not sure why I didn’t cover it at the time because it’s a great article. Allow me to make up for this oversight by pointing it out to you now. Here’s Paul’s intro to the article.

One of PHP5’s landmark new features is the inclusion of a library of SOAP functions that make it easy to interact with SOAP based web services. While these functions are very powerful, learning to use them the first time can be a little intimidating. The goal of this article is to introduce you to PHP5’s basic SOAP functions and how they are used through a working example.

Paul does a great job of introducing the basics. He walks you through everything you need to know to consume SOAP services from PHP. He shows you Amazon’s WSDL and even explains what the WSDL is! He goes into detail on his sample of retrieving information from Amazon’s web services.

As a special bonus for those paying close attention he manages to show you how to retrieve and use information from Amazon while at the same time promoting his new book from Wrox press. It truly is an impress bit of sleigh of hand.

So if you are looking for a good SOAP primer, look no further than this article. It’ll get you up and running and consuming SOAP in no time. (Figure of speech…not to be taken literally.)
