Stewart Nickolas wrote QEDWiki, in my mind he needs no further introduction. For those who don’t remember, it’s that uber-cool wiki thingy IBM is working on. We’ve covered QEDWiki previously here on DevZone. Stewart is speaking with Andi Gutmans at ZendCon this year on “Interoperability between J2EE and PHP”. Since QEDWiki is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a while I can’t help but feel that his session at ZendCon is going to be cool too. I since I love cool, I decided to give Stewart a call to see if I could get a sneak preview.
So Stewart, without giving away all the cool, can you tell us a little bit about what you will be talking about?
Sure, Andi and I will talk about some “J2EE to PHP Interoperability” [Ed. interop is what the cool kids are calling it.] work we’ve been doing. In the spirit of the track, PHP and Web Services, architecting and building service based applications, we thought we would start with a top down look at some interesting things going on in the industry around mashups and what’s driving this new space of situational applications. Then we work down into more of a discussion of the web services, the technologies enabling mashup creators around the mantra “Assemble, Wire, Share”. We are enabling a whole new class of developers to developer these applications using these new technologies that are really being pushed by SOA [Ed. Service Oriented Architecture for those of you still using VB.] delivering some of the promise of several years ago.
Then we’ll drive it all the way back to J2EE and PHP interop discussion.
Wow, Stewart, that sounds like really interesting stuff. Can you talk a little more about interop? I mean since PHP 4, there has been talk of using Java objects in PHP code, are we now seeing that interop become a reality with PHP 5?
In our discussion, Andi and I will talk about the joint work we did. We’ll talk about the work we did to make sure that in the loosely coupled mode was wsi.org compliant. That’s an important entry point for enterprises to get involved. Now moving over to the other end of the interop spectrum, is the tightly coupled model. We will talk about how we have enabled the Java Bridge to inter-operate with WebSphere. This means that if you are wanting closer access to the objects, you can get direct access to the J2EE artifacts using the Java Bridge.
Wow, sounds like you and Andi have a great session. I look forward to hearing more next week at ZendCon.
