May 2017 PHP Community (coffee) Cup of Service winner

Since this is the very first “Michelangelo van Dam PHP Community (coffee) Cup of Service”, I spent a long time running through potential recipients. To set the tone for this award, I wanted someone who gives a lot back to our community. While there are a lot of worthy recipients that meet the criteria, the one that stood out to me was the man whose name is on the award.

it is our pleasure here at Rogue Wave to present the very first “Michelangelo van Dam PHP Community (coffee) Cup of Service” to non other than the Don of the PHP Community, one of the PHP Ninja Turtles, Mr. Michelangelo van Dam himself.

For those that are not aware of the contributions that Mike makes to our community.

  • He is one of the founders of the PHPbenelux PHP community. It’s not a User Group, it is an entire community of more than 30 User Groups under one umbrella. Mike regularly travels to the groups under the PHPBenelux umbrella speaking and encouraging others.
  • He is one of the founders of the PHPBenelux Conference.
  • He is a regular speaker at PHP conferences worldwide.
  • Even when he isn’t speaking, he attends conferences on his own dime.

For all that Michelangelo does for the PHP community, we award him the “Michelangelo van Dam PHP Community (coffee) Cup of Service”.

Thank you Michelangelo for all that you do for the PHP community. Keep up the good work.

About Cal Evans

Many moons ago, at the tender age of 14, Cal touched his first computer. (We're using the term "computer" loosely here, it was a TRS-80 Model 1) Since then his life has never been the same. He graduated from TRS-80s to Commodores and eventually to IBM PCs.   For the past 10 years, Cal has worked with PHP and MySQL on Linux OSX, and when necessary, Windows. He has built on a variety of projects ranging in size from simple web pages to multi-million dollar web applications. When not banging his head on his monitor, attempting a blood sacrifice to get a particular piece of code working, he enjoys building and managing development teams using his widely imitated but never patented management style of "management by wandering around". Cal is happily married to wife 1.33, the lovely and talented Kathy. Together they have 2 kids who were both bright enough not to pursue a career in IT. Cal blogs at and is the founder and host of Nomad PHP
