Good is good in the final hour, in the deepest pit, without hope, without witness, without reward.
— Nardole [quoting River Song] Dr. Who S10E6 “Extremis”
Service, especially when done without expectation of reward, deserves to be recognized. Many times, recognition can simply take the form of stopping to say thank you to someone who has helped you along the way.
There are times however, when people stand out. Their contributions are large enough that a simple thank you just won’t do. In the PHP community we have many people like that.
We at Rogue Wave want to step up and make sure that these people are recognized. Starting this month, May of 2017, we will be awarding one outstanding member of the PHP community the “Michelangelo van Dam PHP Community (coffee) Cup of Service”. We will award one each month.
Why is it named after Michelangelo van Dam?
For as long as I have been a member of the PHP community, Michelangelo has been contributing. (and that is a long time.) I was privileged to get to know him as a friend when I lived in the Netherlands and I’ve watched as he has built his little corner of the world into a PHP community powerhouse. He has been both a role model and a mentor to me all these years.
Why a coffee cup?
If you have ever seen Michelangelo, you’ve seen his coffee cup. He carries a real nice Contigo travel mug. Most people when they first meet Michelangelo would swear that it is actually attached to his hand as it is rare to see him without it. He is almost inseparable from his coffee mug. Therefore, as a tribute to him and the energy he brings to the community, we chose his coffee mug as the award.
How will the winners be selected?
Each month, myself and a secret council of elders* will don our sacred robes, gather together, and select someone to receive this highest of honors.
What if I know someone who should receive this highest of honors?
If there is someone that you deem worthy of the “The Honorary Michelangelo van Dam Community (coffee) Cup of Service Award”, you can nominate them. Send me an email at email@example.com. Tell me what this person has done to contribute to the PHP community and why you think they should receive the award. Make sure you tell me how to get in touch with them. Also, let me know if you want your nomination to be anonymous. If you don’t say so, i’ll assume you don’t care if I mention that you nominated them. I will bring all nominations before the council for deliberation.
The recipient of the award will be announced each month here on DevZone. Each recipient will get their own post on DevZone but this page will always include a complete list of winners.
